AI in the Classroom

Within the past few years, Artificial Intelligence has been on the rise. The question is whether AI is enhancing learning and efficiency or if it is making students too dependent on technology. Trinity Christian Academy has recognized that AI cannot be avoided that easily, so they have begun to set guidelines for using it appropriately.

Around the school, you can find papers that specify what AI is allowed to be used on. When asked, English teacher Mrs. Creacy says that she “used to be so much against” the use of AI in the classroom but recently she has been discovering how it can help learning. She has been having her students put their essays into AI along with the rubric and have it grade them. This is helpful for students and teachers because it gives students quick feedback that teachers are not always able to give. She specifies that she tells them not to let AI correct the work for them because she does not want to “mess up the integrity of their own work.”

English teacher Mrs. Peterson has also been affected by the increase in AI, as she has noticed students’ improper use of it. She said that “once the students have learned how to do the skills on their own, AI can be a good efficiency tool.” She has not been incorporating AI as much into the structure of her class but says she has seen tools such as Notebooklm be useful.

After speaking with multiple teachers, it becomes evident that AI can be a really helpful tool when it comes to efficiency and feedback but can also be used incorrectly.
