Theory Thursday is a much-loved tradition at Trinity Christian Academy. It is an optional weekly meeting during lunchtime where students and staff can discuss their opinions on different biblical subjects, as well as religious and historical theories. Theory Thursday started in 2023 with this year’s current junior class. It started as a talk about Mormonism that lasted through lunch and has now turned into a weekly gathering that everyone looks forward to. Since then, Theory Thursday has become a time where students can talk about different biblical topics, ask questions, and hear other people’s opinions. It is a place where students can have conversations about things they may not normally get to talk about in class. Theory Thursday is held for both high school students with Mrs. Coalson and middle school students with Mrs. Van.
Theory Thursday has turned into somewhat of a tradition at Trinity Christian Academy, with more and more members joining every year. This tradition is also going through a transition for both high school and middle school. High school is now moving away from the traditional presentation. Mrs. Coalson has turned it into more of a discussion from a biblical perspective. This allows the students to say things more freely and not have to research every part and make it like a school project. Mrs. Coalson explained the struggle with the old presentation style, saying, “It was a struggle last year to get people to sign up, and research a theory, and make slides, and present it.” These new changes could invite a lot of new people to join Theory Thursday, which will go into effect this upcoming Thursday.
Middle School Theory Thursday has also undergone some changes. Mrs. Van is now adding house points for those who present. Mrs. Van explained why, saying, “Presenting takes a lot of work, having to come up with a topic, research it, and then give a lecture about it.” Eighth grader Clayton Thompson, a student who regularly attends Theory Thursday, said he liked the new house points because it will “bring a lot more people that want to do stuff instead of just coming.” Another new change is that Mrs. Van is also making it more organized. She is adding basically a sign-up sheet. You have to sign up for your week and then get it approved by Mrs. Van. This lowers the chance of having to find someone at the last second to present.
Overall, students at TCA thoroughly enjoy Theory Thursday. Junior Tripp Morgan, who was one of the students who came up with the idea for Theory Thursday, expressed that he loves being able to “talk about non-school topics… and we get to express our own ideas and it is more of a debate instead of a class.” Theory Thursday gives students a chance to learn from each other, ask questions, and have meaningful conversations about what they believe. Hopefully, Theory Thursday will continue to be a place where students can openly share their thoughts and learn something new from others outside of the regular curriculum.
