TCA basketball has a rich history that goes all the way back to 1998, when both boys’ and girls’ teams were first established. The very first games weren’t played in the familiar Eagle Gym, but in an old metal building that was said to have had broken windows — a humble beginning for what would become a strong program. Not long after, Barber Gym was built in 2012, providing an updated home for the teams and giving players a place to practice, compete, and grow their skills. Since then, countless seasons, games, and memorable moments have unfolded in Barber Gym, shaping the program into what it is today.
The boys’ basketball team finished this season with a 13-17 record, highlighted by two key wins over Midland Classical that secured a playoff spot. They edged out Classical by 4 on the road and followed that with a 5-point victory at home. Their season came to an end in the Bidistrict round against Tyler All Saints, but the team showed determination and growth throughout the year. First-year senior Caleb Hart reflected on his debut season, saying, “I wish I would have played earlier because I love playing ball. I might not be a Michael Jordan, but it’s the heart that matters, and I love being a team player.” The team can look back on a successful season full of hard-fought games, memorable moments, and progress that sets a foundation for next year.
The girls’ basketball team finished the season 22-13 in a dominating year with just seven players. They pulled two impressive wins against Midland Classical to secure a playoff bid, including a tiebreaker game in Abilene. Down by 14 at the half, the team showed incredible determination and came back to win by 4 points. Heading into the playoffs, the focus and intensity were unmatched. In Bidistrict, they defeated Tyler All Saints 57-37, followed by a 58-34 victory in the Area round, before their run ended against Lake Country in the Regional Finals. Senior Emily Ickert capped her high school career with 999 points this season, bringing her total to 2,940 points over four years. Sophomore standout Alex Ickert reflected on playing alongside her sister for two seasons, saying, “I felt like our relationship grew closer because of sports and having that time together.” Overall, the team can look back on a highly successful season filled with determination and teamwork even within a family.
It was an impressive year for both the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs, with each team leaving a mark of unforgettable games. On the boys’ side, the team will be saying goodbye to seniors Caleb Hart and Jonathon Overholt, who were key contributors throughout the season. On the girls’ side, seniors Berlynn Kaznowski, Emily Ickert, Hannah Miller, and Christina Kuschel will be graduating, leaving big shoes to fill after an impressive season. With returning players ready to step up and new talent coming in, expectations are high for next year, and both programs hope to build on the momentum from this season.
