Rumor has it that a new elective has sprung up on the third floor. That fictional rumor would be correct with the new elective being Role-Playing Games, taught by Coach Hahn. This elective focuses on learning and participating in games of the role-playing variety. As of the publishing of this article, the class is currently going through one of those games in the form of a campaign. A campaign is a story which they follow while playing as their characters, which they created themselves. The class plans on finishing playing the entire campaign through the rest of the school year and starting a new one next semester for any new students who might be joining.
One of our reporters at Trinity Times was able to sit in on one of the classes. An average day in the class starts with the members of the elective and Coach Hahn sitting down at a long table in the center of the room and pulling out their laptops. Each student then pulls up their online character sheets, which they filled out themselves. Each character was built within the imagination of its creator. The students’ characters are in a party within the game, which is just a group of people traveling together. They act as their characters as they travel the fictional world created by Coach Hahn. From fighting mythical beasts to even petting a frog, the students use reasoning and critical-thinking skills in order to overcome the problems they face. The adventures the party goes on are very chaotic.
One of the students in Role-Playing Games, Cash Tiwater, walked one of our reporters through creating a character. “There are two main parts to making a character,” He explained, “you have the race… and your class.” The race of a character determines how the character looks and a few smaller attributes. On the other hand, the class of a character determines basically everything else about the character. Cash then went on to explain the intricacies of creating a character, and basically, the creator of the character decides. The creation process is simple and fun!
Coach Hahn, has been playing games similar to the ones in Role-Playing Games for many years and decided to step up as narrator of this campaign. He enjoys hosting the class as the narrator of the game, with him saying, “(I) give them these problems to keep the game interesting.” Coach Hahn is impressed by all of the different ways his students come up with to solve the problems he gives them.
Coach Hahn hopes to do the class again next year and recommends it to anyone who is “really into storytelling and being creative… Basically nerds.” He welcomes anyone into the class, even though the class is getting pretty full. If the new TCA elective Role-Playing Games seem interesting and you would like to sign up for next year, make sure to check it out before the class fills up.
